My work is about the everyday; the street, objects, buildings, and people, some I know and most I don’t. The people I photograph are generally not famous and the events are of no apparent historical significance. I make singular images of decisive moments, which over time can find their way into a series and even receive additional titles.
I chose the camera as my tool because my eyesight is limited, obscured by preconceived notions of what an image is. Our eyesight has been shaped by the visual information we have been receiving over the years, directing the way we look at things. We also have figured out that images are most eye-catching and effective when they are at their most stereotypical, illuminated by its clichés. The camera helps me see these seemingly stereotypical sights I’m drawn to differently. It provides me with a split-second celluloid-reality of my interests, which hopefully falsifies -or complicates- my prior perception.
I don’t believe in the grand truth or an ultimate reality, but in the multitude of meanings that can only be discovered by paying attention to one’s own specific filter of experiences. "Smaller", more specific visions need to be added to the numbing re-representations of what we already know. I propose to use photography in my search of further realities, trusting the shutter to reveal visual clues the human eye can’t catch. With the camera I immerse myself in situations that might hold invisible information, trust my instincts, and try to uncover the unexpected.
